Inked Tines — October 24

Nearly all of my writing this week was for work. There wasn’t much journaling to be had. I only wrote one journal entry for myself. Some weeks it drizzles, others it pours.

Toolset

Pens. Once the Kaweco went dry, I needed another pen to lug around in my pocket. The Lamy Safari called out as the best next choice seeing as it was the cheapest pen in my toolkit - and because pastel goes with nearly everything.

  • Nakaya Neostandard — 1/3 used, mostly on journaling.

  • Lamy Aion — Still nearly full. Platinum’s Blue-Black does not work for me. I’m considering dumping the ink and going with a new pairing.

  • Lamy Safari — 1/2 used. This became my pocket pen mid-week. Used mostly for notetaking.

  • Mythic Aeschylus — Still full. I like the purple. The pen just wasn’t picked up much.

  • Karas Kustoms Decograph — 1/3 used. This was my favorite writer for lesson plans. The titanium EF writes more like a B, but I supposed that shows off the better qualities of Papier Plume’s #13.

  • Pelikan m805 — 1/2 used. I like a double nib for meetings. Became my daily driver once the Sailor kicked.

  • Pilot CH 912 — Emptied this morning. Far and away the most fun pairing from the week.

  • Sailor PG — Empty. This was my daily driver. Neat lines. Smooth writing. Cool look.

  • Kaweco Frosted Sport — Empty. This was my overachieving pocket pen. Half a journal entry, a bunch of notes and lesson plans, and a draft letter.

Notebooks. Most writing this week happened in my work bullet journal and my personal journal. We have reached page 100 in the work bujo. I added nine pages: two for the weekly spread, five lesson plan outlines and meeting notes, and a one-page analysis. The analysis became a color-coded list of my students’ research projects. This page will be a helpful reference when I start scheduling outside discussants to Zoom in and speak with my students about their projects come the spring.

I did also take six pages of meeting notes in my pocket A6. I migrated these into a meeting log page in my work bujo.

Seven pages of my journal – a lovely felt-covered notebook from Musubi – saw ink this week.

Written dry. It’s a good week when pens runs dry. Three went down in the service of teaching young folk: the Kaweco, the Sailor, and the Pilot 912.

The Kaweco went dry smack in the middle of Wednesday night’s journaling. That Blue Velvet Storm ink is something else.

The Sailor Pro Gear coughed up on Thursday. Good thing I had a second pen inked with grey. The Pelikan m805 came to the rescue for the rest of the week. Recording tasks with a B nib was a new experience. The reversible grind (EF) on this pen made a more enjoyable writing experience within the 3.7 mm grid of my gradebook.

3.7 mm is tiny

Newly inked pens. I inked my Pilot 912 with Monteverde’s Caribbean Blue on Tuesday. Pairing such a bright ink color with a narrow nib makes for a bright blue except for the beginnings of words, where I tend to push slightly harder.

The SF nib easily puts down enough ink to show off the medium shading and a slight amount of sheen. It’s a surprisingly fun combo. I grabbed this pen consistently throughout the week.

Collection

Incoming / new orders. TWSBI’s new iridescent Vac is simply too good to pass on. It hits a lot of my bases: function-forward build, fully cleanable …

… and gorgeous.

I don’t yet have a pen with a vac filling system. Both I and my other half will jump to use such a fun-looking pen. Long story slightly short: Kirk Speer has a pre-order from me through his shop over at Pen Realm - complete with a F-CI grind.

Outgoing / trades or sales. Not a thing.

Currently listening

A whole lot of Tash Sultana.
